Guy Grant, a Scot born and brought up in Kenya, always knew that when he made
his home he wanted to be able to look out of a window and see wilderness stretching
to the horizon. He wanted his own land to be a ranch in Kenya. But to realize
this dream took many, many years. He began with an old landrover, two somali pony
fillies, and a bank loan which took 20 years to repay. He began in 1964 as one
of newly independent Kenya's hopeful citizens, investing his all in his venture
and his country.

Now nearly 40 years on from that beginning El Karama ranch is a thriving testament
to his vision and extraordinary commitment.
His wife, Lavinia Grant, has chronicled this story and the life, character
and natural history of El Karama in her two illustrated books ' A Small Piece
of Africa' and 'On a Kenya Ranch' both of which can be purchased at
the ranch as mementoes of your stay.

Laria Warwick, the couple's eldest daughter, guides and hosts the horse
safaris. She lives and works on the ranch, taking special responsibility
for the horses and cattle. Her love for, and knowledge of this piece of
Africa means that visitors are welcomed to an unusual experience in which
the safari goes hand in hand with the opportunity to discover a way of
life and a relationship with the land which is becoming increasingly rare.
